Among the more surprising elements included in the program are a built-in text editor, audio playback/editing and a game engine.

Blender Portable has no configuration options to speak of as all the program's features can be toggled from the main interface. It is really a program for experts, or for users who hope to become much more proficient. Although there are good tutorials on the website that will get you making basic animations and 3D creations, Blender Portable is not a program that casual users would - or should - play around with. If 3D creation is your thing and you don't have a copy, you're almost certainly missing out.

On the down side, CCleaner Portable does not allow you to undo changes, so you must be very sure about what you want to erase before clicking on "Yes". Also, the program can take a few minutes before finishing the analysis that must be done prior to deletion. However, this is probably due to the fact that CCleaner Portable runs from a USB device and that we checked all the available options when cleaning our system ? the test found 558 MB of removable material, which obviously took a while to be deleted.

All in all, CCleaner Portable is every bit as good as its "big brother" and comes in really handy when you want to use it on any PC without installing anything or leaving any traces behind you.

The major reason why users are flocking to Hotspot Shield though is because it allows you to view sites in the USA that are usually restricted to outside users. This is particularly useful for video sites such as Hulu or restricted videos on YouTube.

Hotspot Shield generally works very well. However, you do have to put up with an ad banner at the top of your browser although you can close it. In addition, it tries to install a toolbar at the beginning although you can opt out of this. If you've got Expat Shield installed, you'll also need to remove that first before installing. Also, surfing with Hotspot Shield is noticeably slower than normal but it's fine for streaming video from video sites such as Hulu.

La banda a disposizione ha dei limiti e non è adatto allo streaming multimediale: servizi come Hulu e Pandora non sono completamente accessibili. In Angry Birds Rio i bellicosi volatili sono alle prese con la liberazione di centinaia, forse migliaia di loro simili, catturati da un perfido pappagallo carioca. Infuriarsi a Copacabana, va da sé, è tutta un'altra cosa. Ma è anche tutt'altro che semplice. Restituire la libertà a tutti quegli esotici volatili, infatti, richiederà intelligenza e abilità eccezionali, come succede anche nella versione originale del gioco.

La scenografia di Angry Birds Rio è quasi cinematografica, e i diversi piani di scorrimento dello schermo di gioco danno un profondo senso della prospettiva, anche se il primo episodio si svolge tutto nello stesso hangar, il che risulta un po' monotono.

La vera buona notizia per i milioni di fan è invece che Angry Birds Rio è in perfetto equilibrio tra la novità (con la conseguente iniezione di freschezza) e la tradizione. Quindi riscaldate i polpastrelli, preparate gli infradito e state pronti. Si va tutti in Brasile. A menar le zampe con Angry Birds Rio.

REAPER è uno studio di registrazione ricco di funzioni ma amichevole anche con chi non ha dimestichezza con i sequencer. Supporta MIDI, plugin VST e può essere avviato come applicazione slave in modalità ReWire

REAPER è un sequencer estremamente ben fornito ma tecnicamente abbordabile. Eccezion fatta per le preferenze, rese un po' farraginose da un'interfaccia arruffata, il programma è molto più intuitivo della maggior parte dei suoi concorrenti, e soprattutto offre feature da applicazione professionale.

Il motore audio di REAPER è a 64 bit, il che vuol dire una gestione dei file audio ottimale (in questi frangenti si usa sempre il termine "headroom", che in italiano, in questo contesto, non ha una traduzione adeguata), il supporto dei plugin VST è totale ed è anche supportato il side chaining. I plugin ReaPlugs a 64 bit in dotazione sono di buona qualità.

REAPER gestisce molto bene il MIDI, compreso l'editing di tracce multiple, e l'uso delle automazioni in fase di mixaggio è implementato bene. L'applicazione è compatibile con un numero illimitato di tracce, e il routing è flessibilissimo. Ottimo anche il supporto ASIO, che consente di accoppiare al programma qualsiasi interfaccia audio senza problemi.

Sorprendentemente l'installer dell'applicazione è anche molto leggero: tutte queste meraviglie, infatti, sono contenute in circa 5 MB. La possibilità di associare a REAPER un editor audio esterno chiude il cerchio, e ne fa uno dei sequencer più appetibili per l'utenza che ancora non vuole avventurarsi nel mondo Pro (e quindi con applicazioni come Adobe Audition), o Pro Tools, Ableton Live o Cubase) ma ha comunque bisogno di uno strumento di alto livello, completo e programmato con coscienza.

Innanzitutto, PowerStrip rileva automaticamente la tua scheda grafica ed è capace di suggerirti le impostazioni perfette, permettendoti di controllare più di nove schede e monitor simultaneamente. Supporta tutte le graphic card più popolari ed è l?ideale per controllare quelle più datate. Ti permette di configurare la risoluzione dello schermo a modo tuo, di personalizzare la gamma di colori, persino di salvare la posizione delle icone sul desktop. Ogni profilo creato può essere memorizzato e applicato ad uno specifico programma. Dalla system tray potrai accedere comodamente ai profili e al ricco, ma intuitivo pannello di configurazione.

PowerStrip si rivela ottimo per risolvere molti problemi di compatibilità tra la tua scheda grafica e alcuni videogiochi. Offre inoltre sofisticate opzioni di controllo di frequenza del memory o dell?engine clock di alcune schede video. Ciò significa che, oltre a calibrare il monitor, potrai effettuare l?overclock della scheda grafica e ottimizzare le prestazioni del sistema durante il funzionamento di alcune applicazioni, magari mentre stai renderizzando un 3D. Ti ricordi che vuol dire prospettiva ortogonale? Ortho Robot ti rinfrescherà la memoria, tra piattaforme 3D, prospettive isometriche e bidimensionali, in un gioco semplice, divertente, ma anche molto snervante.

In Ortho Robot l'obiettivo è semplice e chiaro: sposta l'automa e arriva al quadrato verde. Ma riuscirci è più semplice a dirsi che a farsi. Le piattaforme 3D sulle quali muovere il robot sono infatti interrotte da spazi vuoti, ?buchi neri? apparentemente incolmabili. La soluzione sta nel cambio di punti di vista.

Oltre a muovere il robot con le classiche frecce della tastiera, in Ortho Robot devi cambiare la prospettiva spostando l'intero quadro fino a farlo diventare a due dimensioni, con vista aerea o laterale. In questo modo gli spazi vuoti si colmeranno e gli ostacoli diventeranno facilmente superabili.

Ortho Robot ha una grafica molto semplice, non degna di nota, e un sonoro inizialmente coinvolgente ma che diventa presto ripetitivo, tanto che ti troverai a spegnere il suono del gioco. La resa grafica di Jet Lane Racing è più che buona e l'ambientazione futuristica riuscita. Ottima la sensazione di velocità, davvero elevata, ma che rende al contempo più difficile tenere il giusto equilibrio tra rapidità e precisione nella traiettoria in curva. Salti nel vuoto, loop, piste ai limiti dell'impossibile rendono spettacolare il titolo.

I controlli sono semplici, basta usare i tasti direzionali per accelerare, frenare e girare. Forse manca un po' di mordente e l'assenza di campionati e sfide in multiplayer online penalizzano leggermente il giudizio su un titolo comunque ottimo per i casual gamer.

Perché DownThemAll non è solo un banale download manager, cioè una pur comoda lista dei file che si stanno scaricando. È anche una soluzione per scaricare velocemente da una pagina web tutte le immagini, i file, i documenti contenuti e linkati in essa. Attraverso dei comodi filtri (configurabili a piacere) è possibile selezionare solo certi tipi di file e tralasciare gli altri senza dovere scorrere manualmente tutta la lista di elementi scaricabili. A volte vorresti testare giochi, programmi o navigare su siti che non consideri affidabili, ma eviti di farlo perché temi di compromettere la stabilità del tuo sistema Windows. Altre volte ti capita di voler provare un nuovo sistema operativo, come Linux, ma ti fermi perché non sai come fare un dual boot o non vuoi formattare l'hard disk.

In questi casi la virtualizzazione può aiutarti, ed è qui che entra in gioco Oracle VM VirtualBox, un programma che ti permette di eseguire all'interno del tuo Windows (sistema host) un altro OS virtuale (sistema guest). In parole povere: due sistemi al prezzo di uno, ma slegati e indipendenti l'uno dall'altro.

Con Oracle VM VirtualBox potrai creare facilmente una macchina virtuale grazie a un wizard pratico e completamente in italiano. Puoi installare diversi sistemi operativi, da MS-DOS fino a Windows Vista, senza dimenticarci di Linux e altri OS minori. Per farlo avrai bisogno solo di un CD/DVD o di una ISO del sistema che vuoi montare. Dopo le operazioni di installazione sarai pronto per lavorare, e non avrai nemmeno la necessità di creare, per esempio, una nuova connessione a Internet. Oracle VM VirtualBox sarà in grado di configurare automaticamente il sistema virtuale con le impostazioni della macchina reale.

Per il resto, sarai libero di giocare con le numerose possibilità offerte da Oracle VM VirtualBox. Tra queste, vanno menzionate la possibilità di condividere cartelle col sistema host e l'opportunità di creare degli "snapshot" che ti consentiranno di realizzare dei punti di ripristino, per recuperare il sistema virtuale in caso di problemi. Quanto detto, però, è solo una piccola parte delle potenzialità di Oracle VM VirtualBox.

Di questo software ci colpisce soprattutto il minor consumo di memoria RAM rispetto a programmi come VMware. In confronto a quest'ultimo, però, Oracle VM VirtualBox paga l'importante assenza del drag and drop per trascinare i file dalla finestra guest al computer host e viceversa. Nonostante qualche pecca di gioventù, è un prodotto che si propone come una delle migliori soluzioni attualmente disponibili nell'ambito della virtualizzazione. Consigliato.

Rispetto agli altri titoli del genere, Take On Helicopters riesce ad innovare e ad avere un maggior appeal grazie anche ad una storia da seguire nella modalità carriera che rende le missioni più avvincenti.

Se cerchi un visualizzatore d?immagini, è probabilmente il miglior programma gratuito in circolazione e compete ad armi pari con software commerciali

IrfanView fa poche cose, ma le fa decisamente bene. Non è certo il programma giusto per trasformare radicalmente le tue immagini o fotografie, ma se hai bisogno di visualizzarle, rinominarle automaticamente e magari fare qualche piccola modifica, è il programma che fa al caso tuo. Soprattutto se hai a che fare con formati particolari, visto che IrfanView è in grado di gestire anche i più rari.

Ti stupirà specialmente come browser, per la velocità con cui puoi spostarti da un?immagine all?altra, comprese quelle molto grosse. Inoltre, una volta arrivato all?ultimo file presente nella cartella, avrai la possibilità di spostarti nelle cartelle interne a quella che stai visualizzando, oppure di risalire al livello superiore.

In questa ultima versione funziona abbastanza bene anche IrfanView Thumbnails (una piccola applicazione a sé stante), che permette di visualizzare contemporaneamente le miniature di tutte le immagini presenti in una cartella; un discreto passo in avanti rispetto alla lentezza di questa opzione nelle versioni più vecchie.

IrfanView ti è utile anche se devi gestire librerie con molte immagini, grazie alle opzioni che ti permettono automaticamente di rinominare e convertire nel formato che più preferisci gruppi di file da te selezionati. Se vuoi espandere le capacità di IrfanView puoi trovare sul sito ufficiale (e nella nostra scheda di Extra) numerosi plug-in per riprodurre altri tipi di media, ad esempio video e audio, nonché i file necessari per localizzare in italiano l'interfaccia.

Funzionano meno bene i comandi di IrfanView per modificare le immagini e anche un semplice resize potrebbe produrre risultati deludenti. Del resto non è per questo che il programma è stato pensato e se gli sviluppatori volessero migliorare queste funzionalità, probabilmente IrfanView ne perderebbe in velocità e non avrebbe un?installazione che occupa sorprendentemente solo 1.36 MB.

WInDVD oltre la lettura dei DVD supporta vari formati video, anche ad alta definizione, ovviamente. Ti permette di impostare la visione in formato 4:3 o widescreen e contiene uno zoom integrato. Ricchissimo di funzionalità, colpisce soprattutto per la possibilità di riprodurre i film a differenti velocità, senza che la qualità del suono ne risenta. Faccio un esempio: hai un nuovo film che dura un?ora e mezza, non stai nella pelle dalla curiosità, ma hai un appuntamento tra un?ora soltanto. Se non riesci a resistere, puoi impostare il lettore affinché faccia concludere il film nel tempo prestabilito. Velocizzerà l?audio e il video quel tanto che basta per non farti perdere una scena, né una battuta. Funziona perfettamente. Provare per credere. Tuttavia tante altre sono le funzioni per chi va di fretta: i segnalibri, un sistema per ottimizzare la visione sul portatile e non rischiare che la batteria si esaurisca sul più bello. Inoltre, per condividere con gli amici le tue scene preferite, è inclusa una funzione di cattura delle immagini: statiche o animate (sottoforma di piccole clip da 15 secondi), che salva gli screenshot direttamente in formato BMP nella cartella Documenti.

Ultima cosa, ma non la meno importante, l?interfaccia. WinDVD è l?usabilità fatta interfaccia utente: così elegante e ben organizzata che usarla è un piacere. Corel stavolta ha dato il meglio. Ogni visione è un?autentica esperienza cinematografica. Ogni film diventa un capolavoro digitale. Manco a dirsi, un simile gioiellino affatica le risorse di sistema. Il momento fatale è quando inserisci il DVD nel lettore. È allora che il sistema entra in crisi. Se supera quei secondi (o minuti o ore!) cruciali, la visione fila liscia come l'olio. Per questo è sempre meglio installarlo su macchine potenti. Magari con ottime schede audio e video.

A cosa serve PDFCreator

I file PDF sono un formato sempre più diffuso, soprattuto in ambito lavorativo. Sempre più gente, ad esempio, manda il proprio Curriculum in PDF. Ma come creare un PDF? Un?ottima soluzione è PDFCreator.

Come creare un PDF

PDFCreator può inizialmente disorientare chi non ha familiarità con le stampanti virtuali. È quindi importante sapere che devi prima avere il file stampabile che vuoi convertire. Assicurati quindi di avere un documento di testo, un?immagine, un file Excel, una presentazione o un?email.

Esistono due procedure per creare il file PDF:

- Apri il documento con il programma nativo (ad esempio, se si tratta di un DOC, aprilo con Word) clicca su Stampa e scegli PDFCreator come stampante.

PDFCreator è utilizzabile solamente a partire da un altro file precedentemente creato e, occasionalmente, può dare problemi di impaginazione. Se hai bisogno di creare un PDF da zero puoi usare Adobe Acrobat X.

Tre operazioni diverse, tre programmi differenti, diverse risorse da consumare. Sarebbe bello poter fare tutto con un unico pacchetto. Mozilla ti offre questo e altro con la sua suite SeaMonkey.

SeaMonkey è basato parzialmente sul motore di Firefox, dal quale eredità la facilità di utilizzo e una robustezza di fondo. L'interfaccia è interamente in italiano. Ma cosa comprende esattamente questa suite? Anzitutto un browser, davvero leggero e con le più comuni funzioni che un programma di questo tipo necessita (gestione di password, download, cookie e così via). Non ti aspettare niente di rivoluzionario, è un browser di base.

Rispetto ad altri navigatori SeaMonkey pecca per l'assenza del motore di ricerca integrato accanto alla barra degli indirizzi. In realtà puoi richiamarne uno tramite il menu degli strumenti, ma risulta poco pratico. In tal caso meglio affidarsi a Opera o Firefox.

SeaMonkey è poi un efficiente client di posta e un gestore di newsgroup. Ma non finisce qui: la suite ti offre anche una rubrica dove poter salvare i tuoi contatti e un semplice strumento di chat IRC. L'editor HTML di SeaMonkey è un'aggiunta interessante e ben fatta, anche se in realtà utile più che altro per piccoli lavori o lievi ritocchi (se cerchi qualcosa di facile ma più completo, Mozilla offre anche NVU).

Suddivide i dati in categorie specifiche per componenti come CPU, RAM, scheda madre, scheda video, hard disk, lettori ottici e periferiche audio. In più mostra dati generici sul sistema operativo utilizzato e una sezione di riepilogo con un colpo d'occhio sugli elementi principali della configurazione del PC.

I dati ricavati con Speccy sono numerosi: giusto per fare un esempio, e parlando di processore, potrai conoscerne il modello esatto, lo step della CPU, il numero di core, la frequenza operativa, le istruzioni supportate, la cache, la temperatura di ogni nucleo e altro ancora. Il dettaglio delle informazioni fornite piacerà ai più smaliziati.

Su certi componenti Speccy può mostrare grafici sull'andamento di temperature, frequenze e così via. Per aprire un grafico è sufficiente cliccare sul relativo pulsante in miniatura per ingrandirlo.

Speccy può anche realizzare uno snapshot per memorizzare i dati dell'attuale configurazione del sistema. Tale funzione è utile per poter poi comparare questi dati con quelli di un altro PC o del tuo stesso computer dopo un upgrade.

MusicFrost è un programma per cercare, ascoltare e scaricare musica dal web. Facilissimo e velocissimo, gli manca solo la parola, anzi le parole (delle canzoni)

MusicFrost è un piccolo portento del download; in più è carino e leggerissimo (si installa in un battibaleno). Va però specificato che nella versione di prova è possibile solo l'ascolto dei brani in streaming, per il download è necessario acquistare la versione completa. Inoltre dei fastidiosi pop-up invitano all'acquisto un po' troppo spesso.

L'uso è estremamente intuitivo: digiti il nome dell'artista o della canzone che stai cercando e MusicFrost ti elenca tutti i risultati relazionati. Teoricamente potresti cercare una canzone anche attraverso qualche parola del testo (così almeno promettono gli sviluppatori sul sito ufficiale) ma al momento questa funzione non sembra essere attiva.

La velocità di download è impressionante e la qualità degli MP3 generalmente buona. Peccato per l'assenza di opzioni di riproduzione più avanzate per il player. Ma nel complesso, MusicFrost ci ha davvero impressionati. Ah, sicuramente già lo sai, ma per legge è permesso scaricare solo MP3 liberi da diritti d'autore!

MS Office 2010 se tourne vers le futur. L'accent a été mis sur le partage de données et de documents à travers ses outils dédiés mais aussi via Internet où une version gratuite de ses applications sera bientôt disponible. Sur le bureau, les changements ne sont pas révolutionnaires mais tout de même très appréciables.

Microsoft Word 2010 se dote par exemple d'un "document map", soit un menu qui permet d'avoir une vue d'ensemble d'un document ouvert et donc de se déplacer très rapidement sur un paragraphe précis. Une sorte de moteur de recherche amélioré, idéal pour ré-agencer ou supprimer le superflu.

Microsoft Outlook 2010 rattrape le train de ses petits camarades, en particulier au niveau de son interface qui s'aligne maintenant sur l'ergonomie générale de la suite. Le moteur de recherche interne est boosté, les messages sont regroupés par conversations (merci Gmail) et la fonction "Clean'up" ne conserve que les échanges actifs d'emails.

Enfin, last but not least, notons l'arrivée d'un petit nouveau dans la suite Office. Microsoft OneNote 2010 permet de partager en ligne et très simplement des images, vidéos ou textes trouvés sur le Web avec ses amis connectés, avant que chacun n'y ajoute une observation ou une information pour l'enrichir.

Microsoft Office 2010 débarque avec ses gros sabots. Plus complet, mais aussi plus stable et plus léger. Cette version n'existe qu'en anglais pour l'instant mais elle risque d'en faire saliver plus d'un.

BitDefender Internet Security est une solution complète et efficace pour donner un niveau de protection élevé à son PC. Très bonne idée que d'avoir inclus des configurations pré-réglées (standard, parent, joueurs...) en fonction de l'utilisation qui est faite de la machine.

When CDs came along, most of us rejoiced in their ingenuity, while some lamented the loss of big old vinyl records.

Those that mourned its passing at least found solace in the fact that they could record their favorite vinyl records into digital format. However, rusty stylus needles and scratched vinyl surfaces mean that the recordings haven't always been great quality. ClickRepair is a small application that tries to help you restore the sound archived from old records made from either vinyl or shellac. Note that ClickRepair is not a vinyl audio capture tool - it can only help improve recordings once you've got the audio saved onto hard disk.

In order to use ClickRepair, you must first capture the sound as uncompressed audio files in 16 or 24 bit format in either AIFF or WAVE format - MP3's are not supported although this is mainly because MP3s have usually lost too much of the quality in the original recording (during the compression process) to be repaired. The program will accept either mono or stereo file formats and the maximum sample rate is 96 kHz. The program analyzes interference on the record and compensates for hiss and crackles by performing what's known as 'audio interpolation'.

You can preview how your new repaired file sounds by previewing either the repaired section or listen to only what's has being removed. However, dragging the cursor along the sound wave produces rather mixed results with the sound jumping from one point to another which may be due to the fact that ClickRepair requires Java to work. In fact, the overall interface isn't particularly intuitive and takes some time getting used to.

All things considered though, if you're looking for an economical way to remove imperfections from your beloved vinyl recordings, ClickRepair is definitely worth a try.

Straight from the start, ScreenSteps guides you through the essential procesures you need to take in order to build your tutorials. ScreenSteps presents you with a main menu, linking to online tutorials that help you get to grips with it. I'd highly recommend taking these first as it can be a rather tricky app to work out on your own.

The recording process takes the format of a record, capture and annotate system that allows you to build up a tutorial logically and clearly. The aim, of course, is to keep the words to a minimum since the screen-grabs are supposed to tell the story. Once you've completed it, ScreenSteps lets you export to a wide variety of formats including HTML, XML and PDF.
